Steps to Apply for Asylum in Ireland
To claim asylum or international protection in Ireland, an applicant must be present in the country and submit an official application.
Where to Apply for Asylum
Asylum applications can be made in two main ways:
At the Irish Border (Airport or Seaport)
- Upon arrival, an individual must inform an immigration officer at Passport Control that they wish to seek asylum.
- If the applicant does not speak English, they should request the assistance of an interpreter.
At the International Protection Office (IPO)
- If not applying at the border, the applicant should visit the International Protection Office (IPO) at 79/83 Lower Mount Street, Dublin 2 as soon as possible.
Important Considerations
- If an individual is detained by An Garda Síochána (Irish police) and wishes to claim asylum, they should inform a police officer, who will facilitate the application process.
- It is essential to clearly state the intention to apply for asylum to avoid delays or misunderstandings.
Applying promptly ensures that an individual’s claim for international protection is processed in accordance with Irish law.
