
Applying for a Permanent Residence Card as an EU Family Member in Ireland
After five years of residency under an initial EU residence card, both EEA/Swiss citizens and their non-EEA family members can apply for permanent residence in Ireland.
Eligibility for Permanent Residence
✔️ EEA/Swiss Citizens: Must have resided in Ireland for at least five years in compliance with EU Treaty Rights Regulations.
✔️ Non-EEA Family Members: Must have legally resided in Ireland for five years under an EU residence card and complied with EU Free Movement regulations.
Application Process
1️⃣ EEA/Swiss Nationals:
- Must submit an application for a Permanent Residence Certificate using Form EUTR2.
2️⃣ Non-EEA Family Members:
- Must apply for a Permanent Residence Card using Form EUTR3.
- The application is submitted to the EU Treaty Rights Division of the Department of Justice.
Additional Option: Irish Citizenship
After five years of continuous residence, many applicants also choose to apply for Irish Citizenship/Naturalisation, in addition to securing their permanent residence card.
A successful permanent residence card holder enjoys the right to live, work, and study in Ireland without restrictions.
