Irish Passport Application Process

Applying for an Irish passport depends on your residency status and whether you are applying for the first time or renewing an existing passport.

Online Passport Service

Irish citizens residing in the following regions can apply for a first-time passport or renewal using the online passport service:

✔️ Ireland
✔️ Northern Ireland
✔️ Great Britain
✔️ European Union (EU) countries
✔️ Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland

For passport renewals, all Irish citizens—regardless of where they live—can renew their passport book, apply for a passport card, or renew a passport card using the online passport service.

Applying from Outside the Eligible Countries

If you are applying for your first Irish passport and do not reside in one of the regions listed above, you must contact your nearest Irish embassy or consulate to request a passport application form.

Alternative Application Methods

✔️ Passport Express Service

  • Available for residents of Ireland and Northern Ireland who do not wish to use the online service.
  • Applications can be submitted through post offices in the Republic of Ireland and over 70 post offices in Northern Ireland.

✔️ Public Counter Appointments

  • Residents of Ireland can book an appointment at passport offices in Dublin or Cork.
  • This service is appointment-based only, with limited daily slots.

Important Notes

  • The online passport renewal service is the fastest and most cost-effective method for eligible applicants. It is available 24/7, 365 days a year.
  • Irish citizens must apply for a passport in the country where they reside. If you are temporarily in Ireland (e.g., on holiday) but reside elsewhere, you cannot apply for an Irish passport in Ireland.
